Richard obtained his medical degree at Sydney University, undertaking post-graduate work at Sydney, Perth and London. His training included a fellowship at the University College Hospital in London and he is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia.

Research interests include the biology of mulitple myeloma and the role of haemopoietic graph manipulation in stem cell transplantation. Clinical activity is in all haematological disorders including haemochromatosis, common anaemias, leukaemia, thalassaemia, myelodysplasia, lymphoma, myeloma, malignant haematological disorders, bone marrow transplantation, thrombotic and bleeding disorders. Due to a home-based chemotherapy program that he developed, a large number of patients have avoided hospital admission.

Richard is an active participant in the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Study Group and other clinical trial groups involved in introducing new treatments for blood disorders.

Currently, Richard is a Consulting haematologist with Clinipath Pathology. He is also a consultant haematologist at Royal Perth Hospital, director of Cell and Tissue Therapies, W.A. and is a Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Pathology at the University of Western Australia.

He also sees patients privately at the WA Specialist Clinic in Osborne Park.
